Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 29 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Sunday flagged off the 12th Annual Half Marathon organised by the Himachal Pradesh Police under the theme “Nasha Ko Maat Denge Ek Saath” (Together, We Will Defeat Drugs).
Despite persistent rainfall and chilly weather, hundreds of enthusiastic participants from all age groups gathered at the historic ridge to take part in the event.
The event saw participation from children as young as nine years old to senior citizens over 80. Competitions were held in four categories: Half Marathon, Mini Marathon, Dream Run, and a Special Run for participants with disabilities.
The Governor also administered an oath to participants and officials to stay away from drugs and work toward a drug-free society.
Just before the marathon, the Governor said, “Apart from youth, elderly, children and women, even differently abled have participated in this marathon… People are doing this marathon to drive against drugs along with the police. This enthusiasm will entirely end drug abuse from Himachal Pradesh…”
He also applauded the large turnout and enthusiasm despite inclement weather.
Talking about inclement weather, the governor added, “Nature is doing its job, and we must do ours. The zeal with which people from all walks of life, youth, elderly, women, children, and the differently-abled have joined this movement is heartening.”
“This enthusiasm may take time to bear fruit, but I firmly believe that we will make Himachal Pradesh drug-free. We must restore the dignity of our Devbhoomi (Land of Gods),” he added.
Among the participants, 80-year-old Subhash Chand Sood, a local resident, drew attention with his dedication.
“This is not just my fight, it’s a message for our youth who are falling prey to drugs. “Addiction is like a trap, like a mouse caught with a piece of bread. I run every year to encourage youngsters to stay away from drugs. The more you stay away from substance abuse, the fitter and healthier you’ll be,” the participant told ANI.
Dhron, a young participant from Shimla, echoed a similar sentiment.
“I’m here to raise awareness because drug abuse is increasing rapidly, even among children as young as those in second standard,” he said.
The winner of the Half Marathon will receive a cash prize of Rs 51,000. Police officials said the event was divided into four categories to ensure inclusive participation and maximise outreach.
Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari, Governor’s Secretary CP Verma, Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, SP Shimla Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, senior police officials, and several dignitaries were also present at the event. (ANI)
